HUGE GROWTH IN UK BEATBOX SCENE CREATES DEMAND FOR SPECIALIST ARTIST AGENCY

The art of human beatboxing, the ability to make music using only the vocal chords, has gained so much momentum in the UK that a specialist agency has been set up to represent it. AllFromTheMouth.com is an online agency where any form of events organiser can find out about and book a local beatboxer.

Beatboxing in the UK has been bubbling away as an underground scene for years, but only recently has its appeal finally broken the mainstream. Bringing the art form to the forefront of the public’s musical attention are world renowned British beatboxers such as Killa Kela, TyTe, Shlomo and Faith SFX, whose recent conquests have brought much interest to the scene.

The art form is the fastest growing trend in youth culture since hip-hop began: the world beatbox portal HumanBeatbox.com has over 8,000 members and 60,000 hits a week. Beatboxers have the ability to recreate entire melodies at the same time as drum sounds, electro effects and even vinyl scratching using only their lips, tongues and vocal chords.

“The art is developing so unbelievably fast,” explains Shlomo, the Björk collaborator who is part of the team behind the AllFromTheMouth.com project. “It’s unlike any other musical instrument in that you can practise wherever you are, whenever you like. You don’t need any equipment other than your physical anatomy, so you improve at an astonishing rate.” This versatility also helps to explain the huge boom in beatbox performances at music venues worldwide. It’s an amazing feat to see, especially for the uninitiated, and its appeal is not limited by genre, language or age group.

Professional beatboxers can now be found in cities all over the UK, and increasingly promoters are using a beatboxer to boost the entertainment value of their event. But until now the expenses involved in booking a beatboxer, along with the lack of a central resource to find out about the country’s professional performers, have sometimes ruled the option out.

Rodney Adams, Ents and Events Manager of Bradford Students Union, says: “In the past promoters would be booking a beatboxer from the other side of the UK, forking out for their travel and accommodation, without realising there was often a talented beatboxer just around the corner.”

AllFromTheMouth.com represents professional beatboxers from all over the UK, and provides an efficient service for any form of events co-ordinator, be they a music promoter, a company organising a product launch, or a youth club setting up music workshops. Beatboxers are also popular with radio stations looking for fresh jingles, advertising agencies seeking voiceovers, and musicians who require a unique sound for their record.

Anything to raise the profile of beatbox would be good.
